Getting to Colombia Is Easier Than You Think

One of the biggest concerns for international fertility patients is the logistics of traveling abroad for treatment. Colombia makes this surprisingly straightforward: direct flights from most major US cities, no visa required, and a modern infrastructure that's built to accommodate international visitors.

Direct Flights from the United States

Colombia has excellent air connectivity with the United States. Bogotá's El Dorado International Airport receives direct flights from at least eight major US cities, while Medellín's José María Córdova International Airport has direct connections from four US cities and growing.

Round-trip fares from Miami frequently drop below $250, and flights from the East Coast are routinely available for $300–$600. West Coast flights typically run $400–$800.

Entry Requirements for US Citizens

US citizens do not need a visa to enter Colombia for tourism or medical treatment. Upon arrival, Migration Colombia stamps your passport with a 90-day tourist permit (Permiso de Turismo), which can be extended once for a total of 180 days per calendar year.

🕰

What You Need

Valid US passport (6+ months validity beyond entry date). Return or onward flight ticket. Completed Check-Mig online immigration form (submitted before travel). That's it.

📅

Time Allowed

90 days on arrival, extendable to 180 days per calendar year. A standard IVF cycle requires 15–20 days, well within the initial permit. Frozen embryo transfer cycles need only 5–7 days.

💰

No Special Medical Visa

Unlike some countries, Colombia doesn't require a medical tourism visa or special documentation for fertility treatment. Your standard tourist permit covers it.

Where to Stay

Both Bogotá and Medellín offer excellent options for medical tourism patients. For a 15–20 day IVF stay, most patients book furnished apartments or extended-stay hotels near their clinic.

In Medellín, the El Poblado neighborhood is the most popular area for international patients. InSer's main clinic is located here, along with excellent restaurants, walkable streets, and a concentration of English-friendly services. The city sits at 5,000 feet elevation in a valley, offering spring-like weather year-round (65–82°F / 18–28°C).

In Bogotá, the Zona T and Usaquén neighborhoods offer similar convenience for patients visiting Eugin, Conceptum, or CECOLFES. Bogotá is larger and more cosmopolitan but sits at a higher elevation (8,600 feet) with cooler temperatures.

Round-trip flights$250–$500$400
Accommodation (15–20 nights)$600–$1,200$900
IVF treatment$3,500–$8,500$6,000
Living expenses$400–$800$600
Total$4,750–$11,000$7,900

Even at the high end, the total cost of an IVF cycle in Colombia — including flights, accommodation, and living expenses — is still less than the base price of IVF alone in the United States.

Clinic Support for International Patients

All major fertility clinics serving international patients provide dedicated support including English-speaking patient coordinators who manage scheduling, translation, and logistics. Many clinics also assist with accommodation recommendations and airport transfers. Virtual consultations before travel allow you to complete initial assessments from home, minimizing time needed in Colombia.

Bottom line: A fertility trip to Colombia is more accessible than most people expect. Direct flights from most US cities, no visa needed, affordable accommodation, and English-speaking clinic staff mean you can focus on your treatment rather than logistics.
