At-Home Fertility Testing: What to Know Before Your First IVF Consultation

Bottom line up front: Before you book a consultation with any fertility clinic — in Colombia or anywhere — you can learn a tremendous amount about your fertility from tests done at home or through your local doctor. Knowing your numbers before your first consultation makes that conversation far more productive and helps your clinic design the right treatment plan from the start.

The Essential Tests

For Women

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone): The single most important fertility test you can do at home. AMH reflects your ovarian reserve — the number of eggs remaining. It can be tested any day of your cycle via a simple blood draw. Normal is roughly 1.0–4.0 ng/mL for reproductive-age women, though interpretation depends on age. Low AMH (under 1.0) suggests diminished reserve, which does not mean IVF will not work but may influence protocol choices. Many direct-to-consumer services now offer AMH testing for $50–$150.

FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and Estradiol: Drawn on day 2 or 3 of your menstrual cycle. Elevated FSH (above 10 IU/L) with low estradiol may suggest diminished ovarian reserve. These tests are available through your primary care doctor or OB-GYN.

TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone): Thyroid dysfunction — both overactive and underactive — can impair fertility and increase miscarriage risk. This is a simple blood test. Optimal TSH for fertility is generally considered to be under 2.5 mIU/L.

Prolactin: Elevated prolactin can suppress ovulation. A blood test can identify this, and it is often easily treatable with medication.

Antral Follicle Count (AFC): This requires a transvaginal ultrasound on day 2–5 of your cycle and must be done by a doctor or imaging center. The AFC counts visible follicles in both ovaries and, combined with AMH, gives a comprehensive picture of ovarian reserve.

For Men

Semen Analysis: The most important male fertility test. Measures count, motility, morphology, and volume. Available through urologists, fertility clinics, or at-home testing kits (though lab-based analysis is more comprehensive). Cost is typically $100–$300. Results take a few days. If the first analysis is abnormal, a repeat test two to three months later is recommended before drawing conclusions, as sperm parameters can fluctuate.

What the Results Mean for Your Treatment

Normal results across the board suggest your fertility potential is good and that you may be an excellent candidate for less invasive treatments (IUI) or conventional IVF with expected good response. Low AMH or high FSH suggests diminished ovarian reserve — you may need modified stimulation protocols and should consider acting sooner rather than later. Abnormal semen analysis suggests male factor involvement — ICSI will likely be recommended as part of your IVF treatment. Thyroid or prolactin abnormalities may be correctable with medication, potentially improving your chances even before IVF.
