Your bags are about to carry more than clothes — they're carrying your fertility medications, medical records, and the practical supplies for what might be a 2–3 week stay in Colombia. Packing well reduces stress during a trip that's already emotionally loaded.
This checklist is built from the experience of patients who've made the trip. It covers the medical essentials, the comfort items, and the things people wish they'd thought of before leaving home.
Medical Essentials — Carry-On Only
These items go in your carry-on bag, never in checked luggage. Lost luggage happens. Lost medications during an IVF cycle is a crisis.
- All prescribed medications — gonadotropins (keep temperature-controlled; most don't need refrigeration during travel but avoid extreme heat), trigger shot, progesterone, antibiotics, any supplements your doctor recommended
- Needles and syringes — pack in a clear bag with your prescription labels visible; carry a letter from your doctor stating you require injectable medications for medical treatment
- Small insulated cooler bag — for medications that require cool storage (some gonadotropins, trigger shots). Gel ice packs work for the flight; your accommodation should have a refrigerator
- Prescription labels and doctor's letter — in case customs or airline staff question your medications. A simple letter on your clinic's letterhead explaining that you're carrying fertility medications for prescribed medical treatment is sufficient
- Medical records USB or printed copies — your AMH/FSH/estradiol results, antral follicle count, any prior IVF cycle records, semen analysis, hysteroscopy/HSG results, any genetic testing
- Insurance documents — travel insurance policy, any medical insurance that applies internationally, emergency contact numbers
- Phone charger and portable battery — your phone is your communication lifeline (WhatsApp with the clinic, telehealth, maps, translation)
Injectable medications and needles are permitted in carry-on luggage when accompanied by prescription labels or a doctor's letter. Declare them at security if asked. Colombian customs similarly allows prescribed medications. If you're bringing a large quantity, having a letter in Spanish (your clinic can provide this) smooths the process.
Clothing for 2–3 Weeks
Medellín's climate is consistent year-round: 22–28°C (72–82°F) during the day, 15–18°C (59–65°F) at night. Pack for spring weather with these IVF-specific considerations:
- Loose, comfortable pants and skirts — during stimulation, you'll likely experience bloating. Tight waistbands are miserable. Elastic-waist pants, flowing dresses, and loose shorts are your friends
- Layers for monitoring appointments — clinics are air-conditioned; you'll want a light cardigan or hoodie
- Comfortable walking shoes — you'll be walking more than you expect (exploring the city, getting to appointments). Break them in before the trip
- Sleepwear that accommodates bloating — loose pajamas or oversized t-shirts
- One nicer outfit — for restaurants or social outings during recovery days
- Rain jacket — Medellín gets afternoon rain showers year-round; a packable rain jacket is more useful than an umbrella
Comfort and Recovery Items
- Heating pad (small, travel-sized) — for post-retrieval cramping and bloating. Electric or microwaveable. This is the item patients most commonly say they wished they'd packed
- Ginger candies or tea — for nausea from medications or post-anesthesia
- Electrolyte packets — hydration is critical during stimulation and after retrieval. Pedialyte or similar rehydration packets are compact and useful
- Comfortable pillow — if you're particular about pillows, a travel pillow for the flight and a small packable pillow for your accommodation can improve sleep during stimulation
- Journal or notebook — many patients find journaling during the process helps with emotional processing
- Entertainment — books, downloaded shows/movies, a tablet. You'll have downtime, especially the day after retrieval
- Earplugs and sleep mask — for quality sleep in an unfamiliar environment
Partner's Packing Notes
If your partner is traveling with you:
- Pack for the same climate and duration
- Bring their own medical records if relevant (semen analysis, genetic screening results)
- Consider bringing a small gift or card for key moments (retrieval day, transfer day)
- Pack patience and emotional availability — this is the most important thing they carry
What NOT to Pack
- Excessive electronics — a phone and possibly a tablet or laptop is enough. Heavy gear adds stress
- Formal clothing — Medellín is casual. You won't need business attire or formal wear
- Too much — you'll likely buy some items locally (toiletries, snacks, even clothing). Colombian pharmacies are well-stocked and affordable. Pack lighter than you think
What to Buy in Colombia
Don't fill your suitcase with things that are cheaper and readily available locally:
- Toiletries — shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, moisturizer are all available at local pharmacies (Droguerías) at reasonable prices
- Fresh fruit — Colombia has incredible tropical fruit that you'll eat daily. No need to pack snacks
- Over-the-counter medications — acetaminophen, antacids, and basic supplies are available at any pharmacy
- Prenatal vitamins — available locally if you run out or forget
- SIM card — buy a local Claro or Movistar SIM at the airport for cheap data ($5–$10 for 2–3 weeks)
Documents Checklist
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay)
- Travel insurance documentation
- Clinic confirmation/appointment schedule
- Accommodation booking confirmation
- Return flight itinerary (flexible dates recommended)
- Emergency contacts (clinic WhatsApp, local emergency number: 123)
- Credit/debit cards (notify your bank of international travel)
- Small amount of Colombian pesos (for taxis, small purchases — ATMs are widely available)
The three non-negotiables: medications in your carry-on with prescription documentation, medical records on USB, and loose comfortable clothing for bloating. Everything else is available locally. Pack lighter than you think, dress for spring weather, and bring a heating pad — you'll thank yourself after retrieval.
