How to Choose a Fertility Clinic in Colombia: The Evaluation Checklist

Not all fertility clinics are equal — in any country. Choosing the right clinic in Colombia is the most consequential decision you'll make in your fertility journey abroad. A great clinic maximizes your chances of success. A mediocre one wastes your time, money, and emotional reserves.

This checklist gives you the evaluation framework to distinguish between them.

Clinic Accreditation and Credentials

Start with the non-negotiables:

Physician Board Certification

Your reproductive endocrinologist should be board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology with subspecialty training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (RE&I). In Colombia, this means completion of a recognized fellowship program. Ask where the physician trained, how many IVF cycles they perform annually, and how long they've been practicing.

Hospital Affiliation

Clinics affiliated with JCI-accredited hospitals (Colombia has six) offer an additional layer of quality assurance. JCI accreditation requires compliance with international patient safety standards, infection control protocols, and continuous quality improvement.

Laboratory Accreditation

The IVF laboratory is arguably more important than the physician. Ask about:

Ask for:

• Live birth rate per transfer — the most meaningful number. Not "pregnancy rate" (which includes biochemical pregnancies and miscarriages) and not "per cycle started" (which dilutes the numerator with cancelled cycles)
• Outcomes by age group — a clinic that only shares overall rates may be masking poor outcomes in older patients
• Number of cycles performed annually — experience matters. Clinics performing fewer than 200 cycles/year may lack the volume to maintain laboratory consistency
• Multiple pregnancy rate — low multiple rates suggest responsible single embryo transfer practices. High twin/triplet rates may indicate aggressive multi-embryo transfer policies

Patient Coordinator and Communication

For international patients, the patient coordinator is your primary point of contact — and the quality of that relationship can make or break the experience.

Evaluate:

• Response time: How quickly do they reply to your initial inquiry? If it takes 3–5 days to get a response before you're a patient, communication won't improve after you commit
• WhatsApp availability: This is the standard communication channel in Colombian healthcare. Your coordinator should be reachable via WhatsApp during business hours (and ideally responsive to urgent after-hours messages)
• English proficiency: Your coordinator should communicate fluently in English. The physician should either speak English directly or work with a medical interpreter during consultations
• Logistical support: Does the clinic help with accommodation recommendations, airport pickup, local navigation? Established medical tourism clinics provide this infrastructure

Virtual Consultation Quality

Your first interaction with the clinic is usually a virtual consultation. This is your audition — for them:

• Did the physician review your medical records before the call?
• Did they explain a proposed treatment plan with reasoning — not just pricing?
• Did they discuss potential challenges specific to your case?
• Did they give you space to ask questions?
• Were they honest about situations where they might not be the right clinic for you?

A clinic that leads with pricing before discussing your medical situation has its priorities misaligned. Your treatment plan should drive the cost conversation, not the other way around.

Laboratory Technology Checklist

Pricing Transparency

Request a detailed, itemized quote — not a lump sum. Your quote should break out:

• Consultation and monitoring fees
• Medications (or a clear estimate range)
• Egg retrieval procedure and anesthesia
• Laboratory fees (ICSI, embryo culture)
• Embryo freezing and storage
• Embryo transfer
• PGT-A/PGT-M if applicable
• Any additional procedures (hysteroscopy, TESA, etc.)

Hidden fees are a red flag. Reputable clinics provide all-inclusive pricing or clearly delineate what's included and what's additional.

Second Opinion Value

Don't commit to the first clinic you consult. Speak with 2–3 Colombian fertility clinics. Compare their proposed protocols (not just pricing), their communication quality, and their willingness to discuss your case in detail. A good clinic welcomes your research — they're confident in what they offer.

Trust Your Instincts

Data, credentials, and technology matter. But so does your gut feeling during that first consultation. Did you feel heard? Did the physician seem genuinely invested in your case? Did the team feel organized and professional?
